Please read these important notes from Larry, our mushroom guy.
- What to bring and how to dress: It will probably be cold and damp out there. We will communicate more about weather shortly before the event. But you can always check Weather.com for the Ashford area to get an idea of what it will be like. Subtract about 5 degrees F for the altitude and make note of rain expectation. But the rainforest will be damp even if it isn’t raining, so dress appropriate in layers, with something waterproof on top. Wear a hat with a rear brim to keep tree debris and insects off your neck. We suggest bringing a compass and a whistle as a noisemaker. Also bring a walking stick and a basket for mushroom collection, as well as a copy of your free permit (see next item).
- IMPORTANT POINT! Each adult over 15 will need to secure a (free) hobby foraging permit from the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Print that out and bring it with you. Start here and select “Apply for a new permit.”
- Contact info in the forest: Where we are hunting in the forest you probably won’t be able to get cell service. But we do have the ability to send and receive emergency texts through the Iridium Satellite System. More details on this will be provided for those who register to come.
